A phone that stays put
A screen, plugged in, by the chair. They press one button. It rings you, or it takes a message. When you call, your face appears. Then it is quiet.

It is not that they cannot use a phone. Most of the time the call itself is fine.
It is the rest of it. Not charged. Not in the room. A pop-up that looks like a scam. A setting tapped by accident, and the ringer off for three days.
So they ring you. You are at work. You love them. You get short with them anyway.
The problem was never the phone. It was the line.

They press one button. It tries to get you on the line.
If you cannot pick up, it takes a message and sends it to you with the audio. They got through either way. Nobody is left listening to a phone ring.
